Ukiyo-e

Ukiyo-e is a genre of Japanese art that flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of such subjects as female beauties; kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers; scenes from history and folk tales; travel scenes and landscapes; flora and fauna; and… erotica.

The World of Pleasure… Painting and Beauty. Ukiyo-e, which literally means “images of the changing world,” reflected the lifestyle and activities of the bourgeoisie. The “changing world” was understood to be the city’s brothel districts and Kabuki theaters. This movement became a kind of attempt to comment on the dissolute lifestyle of the new elite, while simultaneously gaining popularity among its representatives. Over time, images of people began to occupy a central place in the works. Portraits of geishas and courtesans enjoyed particular success. These works of art served commercial interests - the female body and its beauty were exploited in clothing advertising, and were also used to please male viewers and promote beauty standards.

Ukiyo-e has had a profound influence on both Japanese and Western art that surrounds us today.

P.S: I’m going to try to create something in this style 👘 😉
