A Red Line that must not be “crossed” is, in politics, a designation of the limit of one side’s patience – a position, if violated, “security is no longer guaranteed.”

Usually the Red Line is openly communicated to the opponent to keep him from committing irreversible actions.

In BDSM, a safeword is a code word ( Red Line ), series of code words or other signal used by a person to communicate their physical or emotional state, typically when approaching, or crossing, a physical, emotional, or moral boundary. Some safewords are used to stop the scene outright, while others can communicate a willingness to continue, but at a reduced level of intensity. 

P.S: “Agree on the rules of the game in advance” means to ensure everyone participating in an activity clearly understands and accepts the guidelines that will govern the play before starting, preventing confusion or disputes later on.
