When osteoclasts break down more bone than osteoblasts can replace, it leads to conditions like osteoporosis.

🗞️ Comment NEWSLETTER for more health information on not only building stronger bones, but other ways to optimize health.

🦴 Osteoclasts break down and resorb old or damaged bone tissue by secreting acid and enzymes, while osteoblasts build new bone by depositing collagen and minerals (calcium phosphate). Together, these cells balance remodeling to maintain skeletal strength, facilitate growth, and repair fractures.

🦴❌ Osteoclasts (Bone Breakers)
-Resorption: They break down, or “resorb,” old or damaged bone matrix.
-Mechanism: They secrete acids and proteolytic enzymes (like cathepsin K) to dissolve bone minerals and collagen.
-Function: They release calcium into the bloodstream and create space for new bone growth.

🦴✅ Osteoblasts (Bone Builders)
-Formation: They build new bone tissue.
-Mechanism: They synthesize and secrete collagen and osteoid (unmineralized bone matrix), which then mineralizes with calcium.
-Function: They repair fractures and strengthen the skeleton.

🚨 Key Differences
Action: Osteoclasts destroy; Osteoblasts build.
Origin: Osteoclasts come from white blood cells (monocytes/macrophages). Osteoblasts originate from mesenchymal stem cells.
