The project peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard 200 and No. 2 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. It was later certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, surpassing 1 million copies sold in the United States as of June 3, 2002.

In 2022, Rolling Stone ranked In a Major Way at No. 178 on its list of the “200 Greatest Hip-Hop Albums of All Time,” further cementing the album’s lasting influence on the culture.
