👇Use my 3C framework to overcome this with your boss.

1. Clarity → I need to see the target before I shoot.

“I want to make sure I’m clear before moving forward. Can you walk me through the outcome you’re expecting on this? If there’s room for interpretation, I want to be intentional with it.”

Why it works: You’re not waiting for direction, you’re requesting alignment.

2. Control → Set the frame before the blame.

“Here’s how I’m thinking of approaching this based on what I know: [insert 1–2 clear steps]. Can you confirm if this aligns with what you’re envisioning?”

Why it works: It gives your boss something to react to. Vague managers often think they’re being clear until you show them otherwise.

3. Calm → Don’t absorb the panic. Redirect it.

“Noted. I’ll get started on that and flush through a couple of options. That way, we can course-correct early if needed.”

Why it works: It communicates forward momentum and gives them a structured way to give feedback.

💡Pro tip: When they drop vague statements in meetings, follow-up with:

“Can I suggest we define a first step before we leave this meeting, so we’re not misaligned?”

It’s simple, decisive and non-confrontational.

If your boss is unclear, that’s the signal to lead, not retreat.

When clarity isn’t given, go ahead and create it.
