As chamadas odontalgias não odontogênicas são dores percebidas no dente, mas cuja causa real está em outras estruturas.

Pontos gatilho musculares, especialmente em masseter e temporal, podem irradiar dor para molares e simular uma pulpite.
Disfunções temporomandibulares também podem gerar dor referida para dentes.
Sinusites maxilares podem provocar dor em dentes superiores.
E condições neuropáticas, como a neuralgia do trigêmeo, podem ser confundidas com dor odontogênica.

O grande risco clínico é realizar tratamentos irreversíveis em dentes estruturalmente saudáveis.

Por isso, o diagnóstico diferencial é fundamental.
Antes de tratar o dente, precisamos ter certeza de que ele é realmente a origem da dor.

Muscle trigger points — especially in the masseter and temporalis — can refer pain to molars and mimic pulpitis.
