Most parents don’t force attendance because they’re harsh.
They force attendance because they’re scared.
They’ve been told:

🔸 “If you let them stay home, you’ll make it worse.”
🔸 “Don’t reinforce avoidance.”
🔸 “Just get them through the gate.”

And sometimes … that works.

But not when a nervous system is already in fight, flight, or freeze.

From a child mental health and social work lens, school refusal is rarely about motivation.

It’s about capacity.

When a child feels unsafe, the brain shifts out of learning mode and into survival mode.

In that state :
🔸 Reasoning drops
🔸 Threat detection rises, and
🔸 The body prepares to protect

If pressure is repeatedly paired with that physiological alarm, the brain can begin linking:

❗️School = threat
❗️Gate = alarm
❗️Morning = danger

That’s classical conditioning.

Not bad parenting.
Not weak kids.
Not defiance.

Conditioning.
And conditioning can be unwired - but not through more pressure.

Research on anxiety treatment consistently shows that exposure works best when the nervous system is regulated first - not overwhelmed.

Safety and co-regulation increase tolerance.
From there, gradual exposure builds capacity.
Not the other way around.

🍓 If this puts words to something you’ve been sensing - save this. You may need it on a hard morning.

🧚‍♀️ And share it with someone who’s being told to “just be consistent” while things are escalating.

This account is for parents navigating school refusal through safety, not pressure.
