We remember the very first time James Solomon rented a space with us to celebrate his birthday with the Jersey City community. After the celebration ended, he didn’t just leave. He stayed behind, cleaning up with his team, listening to everyone, making sure things were taken care of. That moment said a lot about who he is as a the leader. It is small things that count. We are looking forward to honoring James on Tuesday, March 10 at Global Gala at White Eagle Hall.

Today, he serves as the 50th Mayor of Jersey City, sworn in on January 15, 2026, following a historic election that brought a decisive mandate for change to New Jersey’s second-largest city.

James is a father, educator, public servant, and cancer survivor. First elected to the Jersey City Council in 2017, he built a reputation as a tireless advocate for working families, fighting for affordable housing, stable property taxes, and fairness in how our city grows.

He met the love of his life, Gabrielle Ramos‑Solomon, in graduate school. They married in August 2015, and just two months later James was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Today, he is grateful to be completely healthy. Together, James and Gaby are raising three beautiful daughters while continuing their shared commitment to making the world a better place.

James holds a Master’s in Public Policy from Harvard Kennedy School and a Bachelor of Arts from Pomona College. He has also served as an adjunct professor at New Jersey City University, Saint Peter’s University, and Hudson County Community College, helping prepare the next generation of public servants.

As Mayor, James is committed to turning the page on corruption and building a government that works for the people — making Jersey City more affordable, improving public safety, strengthening services, and creating opportunity for every resident.
