In case gunmen ever break into the Have Faith Haiti compound, staff regularly conduct surprise emergency drills. The children in the orphanage rush to a concrete bunker with steel doors. There is a generator, a month’s supply of food and water, and cameras to monitor outside. The orphanage is located inside Port-au-Prince, a city largely controlled by violent, armed gangs. From the outside, the compound looks like a prison with concrete walls that are 30 feet tall, barbed wire, and guard towers.
