Some outtakes from the “ Vikings who vanished” in Greenland for natgeo a story published in the current ( March)  issue of the magazine. First image : Ruins at Igaliku, once the religious heart of the Norse settlements, dot Greenland—but offer few clues as to why the Vikings disappeared. second, third and sixth image : The original Viking colonists—led by Erik the Red, described by one historian as a “hot-tempered serial killer”—arrived in the late 10th century, many as practicing Christians. Hvalsey Fjord Church, dating from around A.D. 1300.  Fourth image : the grave of Igaliku bishop, Igaliku was a major Norse Viking settlement in South Greenland. View of the Brattahlíð - replica of Tjodhilde’s Church and Norse long house (2000) in Qassiarsuk (Narsarsuaq). In the Eastern Settlement, Erik the Red built the estate of Brattahlíð, near present-day Narsarsuaq, in what is known today as Qassiarsuk.
