'In Your Heart a Devil was woven together primarily from two things: a Scottish folktale that had buried itself in my psyche irrevocably, and a drive to play around with the gothic genre and its tropes.

'There's something to the big empty mansions with all their ghosts that always seems to hide, at their heart, a haunted woman. What I most wanted to explore was the heavy loneliness and isolation that would surely stalk those halls, and what kind of choices someone who lives choked by intense fear might be doomed to make.

'To me, this is a book about the lengths we go to for our own ideas of love, how profoundly a sense of alienation can affect your perceptions, and how, in reaching for human connection lies the biggest horror of all: the possibility of falling short and finding nothing at all.'
