Surf Gang is one of the most influential underground rap collectives of the past five years, here’s why 👇

The New York crew, centered around producers Evilgiane, Harrison, and Eera, grew out of the city’s skate culture and internet rap scenes in the late 2010s. Evilgiane has said the Surf Gang aesthetic came out of skating around Sunset Park and linking at LES Skatepark, where the DIY mindset and “do it your own way” attitude fed directly into the music. Polo Perks has said he linked with Evilgiane in 2018, right when Giane was “putting together something called Surf Gang,” which helps date the collective’s formation to that period.

By 2021, Surf Gang had become a real movement, with Vice describing them as a 12-member NYC crew whose sound blended drill, emo rap, SoundCloud rap, and experimental pop into what they half-jokingly called “post-rap.”

Projects like SGV1 and At Least We Tried helped establish Surf Gang as a creative hub for artists like Babyxsosa, Polo Perks, and Moh Baretta, while producers in the group began working with artists across the underground and beyond. In recent years their influence has only grown, with Evilgiane producing for Kendrick Lamar & Baby Keem, A$AP Rocky & Playboi Carti, and the collective continuing to release projects through Surf Gang Records.

Now they’re moving even further into the spotlight. In 2026, Surf Gang teamed up with Earl Sweatshirt and MIKE for the collaborative project Pompeii // Utility and a major international tour. Their atmospheric, internet-born production style has already shaped a new wave of underground rap, and a lot of today’s scene still carries traces of what Surf Gang started.

Is Surf Gang the most influential producer collective of the underground rap scene today? 🤔
