No. 4 seed Nebraska will try to find a similar weakness Thursday when it faces No. 13 seed Troy in the first round of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament in Oklahoma City. For both programs, the stakes are the same: a chance to secure the first NCAA Tournament victory in school history. “The team’s won 20 games in five straight years, so they’ve got a winning culture and we’re going to have to be on point,” Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg said. “It’s a great time of year. It’s a fun time of year. I’ve talked to our guys about enjoying it, but at the same time, this is a business trip for us.” Nebraska enters the tournament with a 26-6 record and finished 15-5 in Big Ten play, tying for second in the conference. The Huskers matched the school record for wins in a season and set a program record for conference victories, earning their highest NCAA Tournament seed since 1991. The appearance marks Nebraska’s ninth trip to March Madness and its second in the last three tournaments — something the program had not accomplished since making four straight appearances from 1991 to 1994. Players such as Rienk Mast, Sam Hoiberg, and Jamarques Lawrence bring tournament experience from Nebraska’s 2024 appearance, when the Huskers lost to Texas A&M in the first round. “Just go out and play it like a regular basketball game,” Hoiberg said. “We’ve been playing this game our whole lives. It’s not bigger than what it is. It’s just a basketball game, and you have to treat it like that.” Troy enters the matchup 22-11 overall and 12-6 in the Sun Belt Conference, earning its NCAA bid by winning the Sun Belt Tournament. The Trojans’ résumé includes one Quad 1 victory, while Nebraska compiled nine Quad 1 wins against top competition. This is Troy’s fourth NCAA Tournament appearance. The Trojans last reached the tournament in 2025 as a No. 14 seed, losing to No. 3 seed Kentucky 75-57 in the first round. Only three players from that roster remain on this year’s team. The teams also share a pair of common opponents. Troy lost to West Georgia 93-89, while Nebraska opened its season with an 86-53 victory over the Wolves. Troy also pushed Southern California to triple overtime before falling 107-106, while Nebraska defeated USC 82-67 in late February. For both teams, the goal is clear.
