In the 1960s, lightning struck a plot of land on a small hilltop in Maine, causing a fire that cleared a half acre. At the time, Betsy Fredericks’ grandparents lived on the property, close to where members of Betsy’s family still live today. With a long-standing connection to the land and two young children, Betsy and her partner, Andrew, located a site on the hill to create a new home for their family. Luckily Andrew, who runs croft_co2, a design-build firm that makes carbon-sequestering prefab panels, felt confident he could build it largely himself—by hand. Throughout the process, the couple wanted to touch every part of the process to create the healthiest and most environmentally friendly home they could.
