PAINTED BEAM GATE! 

I’ve never gone viral on instagram before. I’ve never had a single negative comment on here. Until last week. 

I posted a reel about painting the old beams in this bedroom in Sussex. And it unleashed the trolling beasts of instagram!

So this audio really made me laugh and is for everyone else who’s been trolled on here. 

I reckon the strategy is to meet it head on with care in your words, joy in your heart, laughter in your soul - a sprinkling of fascination and an open mind to learning. (Or just ignore it all!). 

So what actually is the problem? 

(And by the way, there are LOADS of beams in this house - some will remain unpainted, others are already painted ✌🏻)

First point - this property isn’t listed. As far as I understand beams in old houses were often painted - in a variety of colours - and sometimes even decorated with pattern.

These beams had already been painted in a gloss black that was impossible to fully strip. 

The previous owners had tried lime washing some of them, but it had looked awful over the black so they stopped. 

Several of the beams in here had been replaced with cheap modern squared-off chunks of wood. Several more had been altered and added to. 

It genuinely didn’t FEEL great in here with these particular beams and now it really feels wonderful. How we feel in a space is important isn’t it?

The only thing I would do differently is use a different paint. I had planned to use a soft chalk paint, but I didn’t want to waste paint that I already had so I used silk woodwork paint. It says it’s semi porous and breathable. I’ve now realized it probably isn’t as breathable as ideally it would be in this situation. So thank you to everyone who pointed this out - I’ll choose a different one next time ✌🏻

So what’s your opinion? Do you really think I’ve done a criminally ruinous act by painting them? Or do you think that it’s fair enough to create a room that makes current people feel happy and peaceful? 

PS As you can see, I’ve done a bit more work on the room now - but it’s still not finished!
