On this 29th night of Ramadan, a mom of two who was arrested after her husband reported her needs URGENT support after being released from ICE detention.

Here’s what she had to say about being detained:

As soon as I landed in Newark Airport I was arrested by ICE. I left Somalia after decades of abuse at the hands of my ex-husband, who beat me as often as he prayed in the mosque. I use to pray to Allah to escape everyday. I got remarried only to experience the same pain. 

Being detained in Elizabeth Detention Center, NJ, was worse than being beaten by my husband till I got a concussion. They stripped me naked, and took away my malaria pills. There were maggots in the food. They put on the air condition all day, and didn’t give us any blankets until we all became sick. I was detained there for five months. For 5 months, I didn’t get any fresh air. I forgot what the sun looked like. I couldn’t see my kids. We only heard sounds of planes since the airport was so close by. We only heard the sound of freedom. It was like being mocked. We would hear freedom, but they told me I would never be free again”
