When James Watt created the unit to market his steam engines, he based it on the amount of work a horse could sustain comfortably all day rather than its maximum strength.

While a horse averages about 0.7 to 1 horsepower over a full shift, it can actually surge to a peak of 15 horsepower during a heavy sprint.

This conservative measurement ensured that Watt’s engines would reliably outperform the teams of animals they were designed to replace.

If we used the peak output of a horse as our standard instead, would you expect the power ratings on modern cars to be significantly lower?
