Almost one year in New York and I finally understand what everyone meant… Everyone tells you before you move here it’s hard, it’ll chew you up and spit you out, just be prepared. And honestly, when I first got here, I didn’t feel that at all. For months everything felt fine, more than fine. It felt exciting and magical, like I was just living inside a dream I had worked so hard for. But then something shifts. Not that the magic goes away because it doesn’t, but there comes a moment where you have to look at yourself in the mirror and ask, am I actually building a life here or am I just experiencing it. And that moment changes everything. Here’s what NYC has taught me so far: 1. At some point, you have to decide if you’re really choosing this life. This isn’t my first move. Not my second, not my third. I’ve moved all over, so coming here I thought I’ve got this. And at first I did. But New York is the first place that made me stop and ask if this is temporary or if I’m actually going to make this my life. Because millions of people want to be here. Millions of people are from here. So why do you deserve to be here and what are you building. It forces you to find your purpose in a way no other place has for me. 2. This is the first place that didn’t hand me a script, it handed me a mirror. Everywhere else I’ve lived there has been a way to be. A look, a vibe, an expectation. You know how to fit in. New York was the first place where I didn’t feel like I had to fit into anything. Instead it was like, okay, who do you actually want to be. There’s no dress code here and no mold. That is freeing but also a little terrifying because it is completely on you to decide. 3. You cannot just take from this city, you have to pour into it. I think a lot of people come here, get what they want, and leave. But if you actually want a life here it doesn’t work like that. This is someone else’s home. I’ve learned that the more you invest in community, in people, in showing up, in getting out of your apartment even when it would be easier not to, the more the city gives back to you. It is very easy to isolate here, which is ironic with how many people are around you all the time. But if you want it to feel like home, you have to treat it like one. 4. This city will test your stamina more than your talent. I have always been a hard worker. I have hustled my entire life. And I think a lot of us are taught that if you work hard enough you will see results. New York does not always work like that. You can do everything right and still get nothing back. You will get told no. You will get overlooked. You will question yourself. The real challenge becomes whether you can wake up the next day and do it all over again anyway. Not letting rejection spiral you, not letting comparison consume you, just staying steady and continuing to go after what you want. 5. New Yorkers aren’t nice, but they are kind, and that changed me. People paint this city as cold or harsh, and sure you will find that anywhere. But what I have experienced here is a different kind of kindness. There is no fluff, no fake small talk, no pretending. People say what they mean and keep it moving. At first that can feel jarring, but then you realize how much unnecessary noise it cuts out. It has made me more direct, more honest, and more comfortable just being myself without over explaining or over polishing everything. This city didn’t break me. It just forced me to really look at myself and decide who I want to be. And I think I’m still in the middle of that🤍 #nyc #nyclife #nyctips #nycsports #newyorkcity
