• Hulu scrapped Chloé Zhao’s #Buffy reboot pilot starring #SarahMichelleGellar after a year in development. Gellar blames a #Hulu exec who “constantly reminded us” the franchise “wasn’t for him,” but multiple sources tell Variety that Zhao’s take may have been too off-mainstream for the streamer

• Zhao, known for her cinematic, almost journalistic style, didn’t translate to a TV pilot requiring heavy exposition, sources say 

• Buffy is introduced as “Anne Summers” in the scrapped TV pilot, living anonymously as a corporate employee at a NYC insurance firm. She only appeared in the final scene, brushing off a coworker’s warning about being late to a meeting: “Nope… wouldn’t want that”
