According to TMZ, a source close to the family stated that although they were “saddened” by his absence from the main broadcast, they understood the situation. “It was a year of profound loss for the industry,” the source noted, including and referring to his death from respiratory failure caused by Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). TMZ also reported that a spokesperson for the Academy explained there was just not enough airtime to include every honored individual, but they mentioned that all contributing stars are recognized online.
