Headlines these days have become especially stressful, so how about we revisit a little conservation success story for a dose of hope to keep us going?

Far out in the Falkland Islands, the small, uninhabited Steeple Jason hosts one of the world’s largest colonies of black-browed albatrosses. Each year, more than 100,000 birds return, find their lifelong mate, and reunite through a ritualized dance refined over many seasons together. They rebuild their simple mud nests and raise a single, fluffy chick, taking turns crossing vast stretches of ocean to feed it until it’s ready to fly.

It’s one of nature’s great romances: birds that (literally) cross oceans for each other. But life here wasn’t always so peaceful. Just decades ago, cattle grazing and poaching had stripped much of the island’s vegetation and threatened to erase the colony. Thankfully, a nature enthusiast purchased the roughly three-square-mile island to protect it as a bird preserve. Years later, it changed hands again, and this time it was donated to thewcs. 

Today the island is one of the world’s most vital strongholds for seabirds and remains proof of nature’s power to recover when given the chance.
