Zendaya just turned a red carpet throwback into a powerful full-circle moment. 🤍

At ‘The Drama’ LA premiere, she re-wore the same Vivienne Westwood gown from the Academy Awards, but the dress carries a deeper history.

When she first wore it at just 18, Zendaya paired the look with locs, which quickly became the centre of controversy after TV host Giuliana Rancic made offensive remarks on ‘Fashion Police,’ suggesting she looked like she smelled “like patchouli oil or weed.”

Zendaya responded at the time with a now widely shared statement: “There is a fine line between what is funny and disrespectful.” She continued, “To say that an 18 year old young woman with locs must smell of patchouli oil or ‘weed’ is not only a large stereotype but is outrageously offensive.” 👏

Leaning into her wedding-themed film, Zendaya explained the choice to Variety, saying, “I kind of remembered the saying, ‘Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue,’ so this is my something old, so I thought I’d bring it back and give it a new life.”

She added, “It meant so much to me this dress. It was such an important moment for myself, my community, for my loved ones. It felt right. And it also just happened to be a wedding dress, so that works!”
