48-hour Edinburgh itinerary 🏰 

Edinburgh was my first stop on my 7-day road trip around Scotland. I got in mid-afternoon on Tuesday and immediately started exploring. 

Here’s how I used just under 2 days in Edinburgh:

Day 1

👑 Walk the Royal Mile / Explore Old Town
The Royal Mile runs from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace. There are plenty of shops along the Royal Mile and unique attractions to check out!

⛪️ Visit St. Giles Cathedral 
This beautiful cathedral along the Royal Mile offers free entry, but I encourage you to leave a donation.

💚 Explore Grassmarket
In the heart of Old Town, Grassmarket offers stunning views of Edinburgh Castle and is a lively area!

💖 Visit Victoria Street 
Don’t forget to snap all the pictures of the colorful buildings! For a crowd-free picture, I went at 6:30 a.m.

🪴 Explore Dunbar Close
Between Ye Olde Christmas Shoppe and Holyrood Souvenirs on the Royal Mile, this Close takes you to a beautiful garden. 

Day 2

🥾 Hike Arthur’s Seat
For the BEST overall view of Edinburgh! 

🌿 Explore Calton Hill
Offers great city views and is home to a contemporary art gallery and the unfinished National Monument.

🏨 Balmoral Hotel
Whether doing afternoon tea or visiting the cafe, Balmoral Hotel has stunning architecture worth seeing!

🗼Scott Monument
When I tell you this monument stuck out in the skyline from anywhere in the city, I’m not exaggerating. In addition to viewing the outside, you can walk the 287 steps.

🌱 East Princes Street Gardens
Take a stroll through East Princes Street Gardens to relax and enjoy views of Edinburgh Castle.

☕️ Waterstone’s Cafe
This bookstore has a cafe in it with the BEST hot chocolate I’ve ever had. It brings the calming atmosphere of a bookstore together with picturesque views of Edinburgh Castle.

🏰 Edinburgh Castle
A trip to Edinburgh wouldn’t be complete without taking a tour of the castle! I recommend booking in advance online.
