Here’s what to do in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in just 10 days. Road trip time!

Day 1: Mackinac Island
I recommend hopping on the Star Line Mackinac Island Ferry to the island from St. Ignace. I’ve been to the island quite a few times, and we’ve typically found a full day was enough time to explore the Grand Hotel, historic Fort Mackinac, grab ice cream, and, of course, eat some fudge. Staying in St. Ignace overnight will allow for an easy drive to Sault Ste. Marie in the morning.

Day 2: Sault Ste. Marie
Sault Ste. Marie is about a 50 minute drive from St. Ignace. While in Sault Ste. Marie, don’t forget to stroll downtown, shop at the local stores, and do a Soo Locks boat tour. Lodging is easy to find in the area as well.

Day 3: Tahquamenon Falls
Make the hour-and-a-half drive from Sault Ste. Marie to Tahquamenon Falls State Park. It’s a must to hike to the Upper Falls. After visiting the falls, I recommend making the 1.5 hour drive to stay the night in Munising.

Day 4-5: Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
I recommend two days to spend exploring Pictured Rocks (even then you could spend more). There are so many trails to hike, nearby waterfalls to explore, and options to kayak or take a cruise for excellent views of the landscape.

Day 6: Marquette
Just a 50 minute drive away is Marquette. There are plenty of lodging options in the area. With plenty of hiking trails at Presque Isle State Park, nearby Sugarloaf Mountain, and lighthouses to photograph, Marquette is a must visit.

Day 7-9: Porcupine Mountains
Porcupine Mountains are a 2.5 hour drive from Marquette. There is plenty of lodging in the area. 2 days in the mountains will allow you to chase waterfalls, visit the Lake of the Clouds, and explore other hiking trails.

Day 10: Kitch-iti-kipi and Fayette Historic State Park
To wind down your trip, make the 4 hour drive to Kitch-iti-kipi to ride the observation raft over the spring. Then drive 40 minutes to Fayette Historic State Park and explore the ghost town.
