Exploring Detroit’s Art Scene: A Weekend-Long Itinerary

Day 1: Explore Mexicantown
Mexicantown, a community within the southwest Detroit neighborhood, is filled with street art & murals. Explore on foot by heading to Bagley Street. 

Vernor Highway also offers more murals and is the home of AURA AURA. Book an appointment here to get a photograph of your aura. 📸 

Day 2: Exploring More Outdoor Art
Visit the Heidelberg Project, an outdoor art installation created in response to urban blight in the neighborhood. The project receives hundreds of thousands of visitors per year.

Drive to Eastern Market, one of the best public markets in the country, and explore the street art.

Walk the Dequindre Cut, a paved urban path that’s nearly 2 miles from Eastern Market to the East Riverfront, filled with street art and graffiti.

Head downtown and visit the Detroit Riverfront and its many sculptures. 

Don’t forget to visit The Belt, an art-filled alley, and another spot to view street murals. ✨ 

Day 3: Sugar Hill Arts District
The Sugar Hill Arts District in Midtown is the center of art in Detroit.

Head to the Detroit Institute of Arts (pictured). This art museum is ranked as one of the top 10 museums in the country.

Head to City Sculpture Park to view welded, contemporary sculptures.

Visit the Dabls MBAD African Bead Museum. Indoors you’ll find the African Bead Gallery. Outdoors you’ll explore the sculpture garden. 🖼
