California institutions are removing monuments and references to the Chicano civil rights leader Cesar Chávez, who was accused of sexually abusing girls in a new investigation.

Fresno State University and California State San Marcos have said they will cover or remove statues of Chávez. Cultural organizations across the state, including the California Museum in Sacramento, also pledged to remove laudatory references to the labor leader from public display.

For decades, Chávez’s likeness symbolized the historic mobilization of farmworkers against exploitative growers in the 1960s. The recent decisions to remove his monuments come as activists and organizations grapple with harrowing accusations of sexual abuse, first reported by the New York Times this week.
