Q: What do Steph Curry, comics, and SFMOMA all have in common? 

A: A mural installation by cartoonist and Bay Area native Gene Luen Yang!

Yang is expanding his reach beyond graphic novels with his first museum work, “Bay Area Hoops,” a commission for our Bay Area Walls series as part of our upcoming exhibition, “Get in the Game.” Check out this behind-the-scenes look at his mural installation:

🏀 Slide 1: The *almost* finalized mural: The basketball hoop is hung and final touches are being made.
🏀 Slide 2: The twinwallsmuralcompany team projects Yang’s comic onto the museum wall to start stenciling.
🏀 Slide 3: The team begins blocking out text boxes with paint.
🏀 Slide 4: Group shot of Yang, Elaine Chu (lileli82), Marina Perez-Wong (themissionblue), Domenico Treatunice Villeda (treatunice), Charlie Callagahan Ertola (thatcharlieboy), and Justine Perez on the last day of the mural’s installation.

A word from Yang: “We watch sports because we enjoy watching displays of courage. Perhaps we hope the courage we see on the court inspires the same in us. My hope is that when the museum’s visitors read the stories we tell on that wall, they’ll come away with a bit of those athletes’ courage.”
