Study Abroad Student Spotlight: John Thweatt ’27 – Ireland 🇮🇪

Meet John, a history and political science double major and communication minor who is studying abroad this semester in Dublin.

Drawn in by Ireland’s rich history, political landscape, and breathtaking countryside, John knew Dublin would be the perfect place to learn and explore. This semester, he’s courses in Irish politics, emigration history, globalization & sustainability, photography, and cultural identity.

On a typical weekday, John takes the train to class and spends about five hours on campus. Between lectures, he meets friends for meals at local restaurants or pubs.

After classes, he gets some work done before spending evenings with friends at their apartments or heading out to enjoy live music and the energy of Dublin’s pub scene.

His favorite experience so far has been traveling through western Ireland and visiting the coastal city of Galway. Despite the unpredictable weather, John was amazed by the beauty of the countryside and the charm of the town.

One surprise for John has been Dublin’s wide variety of affordable and delicious food options. He also loves exploring new places, meeting locals, and experiencing different cultures.

His advice to Trinity students considering studying abroad? “Do it. It can be challenging at times, but it is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. You learn so much about yourself while creating unforgettable memories.”
