Lost to science for 6,000 years, two tiny marsupials have officially been rediscovered in Indonesia!

In the remote rainforests of New Guinea, scientists have confirmed sightings of the Pygmy Long-fingered Possum and the Ring-tailed Glider — species previously known only from ancient fossils. Researchers worked with members of the Tambrauw and Maybrat Indigenous communities to help locate these two species. Link in bio to learn more, and to see the possum for yourself 👀

These rediscoveries are a powerful reminder: all is not lost.

While these were independent findings, they perfectly capture the mission of the Search for Lost Species, the largest-ever global effort to find and protect lost species. The search is on for more than 4,300 species that have not been documented by science in at least 10 years—and often much longer! With local and international partners around the world, we are finding hope, adventure, and new opportunities for effective conservation action.
