In this clip, Rev. Dr. Charlie Dates pushes back on the idea that Black Christianity began on American plantations. He reminds us that there is a clear, documented line of African Christians — from North Africa to West Africa — long before the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

Africans before slavery were not only principals, school teachers, and court scribes but they were also pastors, priests, catechists, scholars, monarchs, and everyday believers who were already following Jesus on African soil. To begin the story at slavery is to accept a false narrative that was never ours.

Black Christians existed before bondage. And their faith shaped the world.
