Dr. Charlie Dates names a hard but necessary distinction: not everything done in the name of Christianity reflects the heart of Christ. In American history, Scripture was often edited, distorted, and selectively used to protect enslavers' economic power rather than proclaim liberation.

This clip reminds us that there has always been a difference between the false faith that props up oppression and the true faith of Christ that confronts it. And the Black Church has long insisted on the latter, reading the Bible with truth, courage, and justice at the center.
