The US News and World Report named Samford University as among the most beautiful college campuses in the country, alongside Pepperdine, Harvard, and Duke. It’s the only Alabama institution on the list of 35.

Heads up, if you’re from Alabama and on Spring Break in Florida right now, you’d better mind your Ps & Qs. The Walton County Sheriff’s Office is taking to social media to shame rowdy spring breakers from Alabama as well as other surrounding SEC states. After evicting some loud spring breakers after complaints, the Sheriff’s Office posted quote “heading back to Sweet Home Alabama before sunset must've been a Tide-al wave of emotions."

The bill we mentioned last week that would require voters to register with a political party in order to vote in that party's primary passed the Alabama House of Representatives. HB541 would apply to 2027 so it would not affect this year's primary. It's now moving to the Senate so more updates to come.

The Alabama Solution did not win the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. However, its spotlight on the alleged abuses and secrecy within the Alabama prison system has brought up an issue that has become a thorn in the side of Gov. Kay Ivey and Attorney General Steve Marshall. Marshall has since called the film a “propaganda documentary” and that Jarecki’s invite was merely a “publicity stunt.”

Gov. Kay Ivey was 1 execution away from setting a record among Alabama governors in the modern era of the death penalty. However, she set a new record entirely. There are only 3 known instances of a governor granting clemency to someone on death row in Alabama. Ivey is now responsible for 2 of them - Rocky Myers' commutation last year and Sonny Burton's earlier this week.   

Nationwide, clemency is "extremely rare" according to the Death Penalty Information Center. Less than 1% of people on death row have their sentences commuted. Meanwhile, the use of the death penalty in states where's it's legal has "risen sharply" with 2025 having more executions than any year since 2009.    

In both cases, Ivey stopped the executions over the objections of Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall. However, Ivey still reaffirms her support for the death penalty. In total, she's overseen 25 executions during her 9 years as governor. Since the moratorium on the death penalty ended in 1977, Alabama is responsible for the 6th most executions in the country and under her administration in 2024, Alabama executed more people than any other state in the nation.
