Elizabeth Keckley was a skilled seamstress during one of the most important wars in American history. She was also a trailblazer, and close confidante of First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln. Born into slavery in Virginia, she eventually purchased her freedom and went on to build a successful dressmaking business.

Her close friendship with Mary Todd Lincoln put her in the middle of defining moments of the Civil War. She later authored a memoir about her time with the Lincolns. Keckley’s talent and ambition survives today through her memoir and statue here at the Virginia Women’s Monument.
