That “peent” is a male American Woodcock calling at sunset, part of a wild spring courtship display where he spirals high into the sky before singing his way back down to impress a mate.

These strange little shorebirds love fields and forest edges and are easiest to find this time of year, right at dusk.

We’re hosting a Woodcock Walk with @queerbirdersofcincy on March 14 from 7-9 p.m. at Otto Armleder Memorial Park, where you can see these birds for yourself.
