Odd Future dropped “Oldie” 14 YEARS AGO today 🤯

Produced by Tyler, the Creator and released in 2012 as the 10-minute closing track on The OF Tape Vol. 2, the song brought together almost every key Odd Future member: Tyler, Earl, Frank Ocean, Hodgy, Domo, Mike G, Left Brain, and even Jasper 😭

The video is where the real lore comes in. It wasn’t planned at all. The whole thing was filmed during an XXL photoshoot at Milk Studios, where they just started rapping their verses into the camera for fun and decided to upload it. No set, no concept, no direction at all… just them being themselves. That’s why it feels so real. You see them joking, interrupting each other, moshing, laughing… it looks more like a home video than a music video.

One of the most important parts of “Oldie” is Earl Sweatshirt’s verse. At the time, he had been sent away and hadn’t released music in over a year, so this was his return moment. Him popping up in the video felt like a huge deal for fans, almost like the full group was back together again 🥲

Tyler opens and closes the track, almost framing himself as the leader of the group. Frank Ocean’s verse includes the line “I’m high and I’m bi,” which became even more meaningful later that year when he publicly came out. Even smaller members like Jasper Dolphin, who wasn’t really known for rapping, getting a verse added to the chaotic, anything-goes energy that defined Odd Future.

Looking back, “Oldie” feels like a snapshot of a moment that couldn’t last forever. Even the group has said that March 2012 was around the time Odd Future started to feel less like one unit and more like individuals going their own way. Within a few years, Tyler, Frank, and Earl would all be on completely different paths.
