🇬🇧 Why did St. Francis speak of “Brother Sun” and “Sister Moon”?

In Episode 8 of Universal Fraternity, Cardinal Peter Turkson reflects on the Christian vision of creation. St. Francis spoke of the world not as a collection of resources to be used, but as a family of relationships in which human beings share a common home with the rest of creation.

For Francis, fraternity extended beyond human society. Everything in creation was connected to the human person—and therefore worthy of care.

This insight continues to shape the Church’s understanding of integral ecology, reminding us that environmental questions are never only technical problems. They are also questions about how we understand our place within the wider community of life.

Nell’ottava puntata di «Universal Fraternity», il cardinale Peter Turkson riflette sulla visione cristiana del creato. San Francesco parlava del mondo non come di un insieme di risorse da sfruttare, ma come di una famiglia di relazioni in cui gli esseri umani condividono una casa comune con il resto del creato.

Per Francesco, la fraternità andava oltre la società umana. Tutto nel creato era collegato alla persona umana e quindi degno di cura.

Questa intuizione continua a plasmare la comprensione della Chiesa dell’ecologia integrale, ricordandoci che le questioni ambientali non sono mai solo problemi tecnici. Sono anche domande su come comprendiamo il nostro posto all’interno della più ampia comunità della vita.
