Our third year of the Batting Cleanup event was a major success. Together with our partners, we were able to guide over 1,100 MLB academy athletes through virtual education programs on ocean literacy and environmental stewardship that culminated in hands-on experiences at beach cleanups throughout the Dominican Republic. Many thanks to @scj and @brewers for once again leading the charge in supporting us with Batting Cleanup.

At our final cleanup of the year last Saturday, 150 volunteers, including young prospects from the @brewers and @athletics academies, removed almost 500 pounds of marine and plastic debris from Playa Montesinos and Fuerte San Gil. 

These volunteers were side-by-side with the likes of some of the Dominican’s brightest young stars in @w_franco_4 @willy2802, and veteran superstars @robinsoncano and @ncboomstick23.

Other notable athletes in attendance included world champion rock climber @sashadigiulian, AVP Pro @jeremy.casebeer, and Major Leaguers luisurias97, @pauldejong11, @brentsuter35, and @kestdaddy.

Saturday’s cleanup results, by the numbers:

215 Pounds of PET plastic 
80 pounds of HDPE plastic 
45 pounds of foam
18 pounds of Tetra Pack
20 pounds of shoes 

While we love hosting these events, we can’t and won’t have cleanups for the next 20 years. We need more solutions. Greater access to waste collection and disposal. A material revolution that finds alternatives to styrofoam and single use plastics. 

All island nations need action NOW from policy makers and local government agencies to enforce stricter regulations to reduce ocean pollution.
