By traditional standards, Luis Gil had a good year when he came back from that lat injury. In 57 innings, he had a 3.32 ERA.

That success just wouldn’t have been sustainable over the long haul. His velocity was way down. A pitcher who sat in the high 90s was now sitting 95. Not to mention, his strikeout stuff plummeted. It was the first time in Gil’s career that he had more innings than Ks. In those 57 innings, he struck out just 41.

The Yankees weren’t too keen on him starting in the playoffs last year, according to the Athletic’s Chris Kirschner, and his start against the Blue Jays went as poorly as they thought it would. Gil gave up a ton of hard contact, and on top of that, the Blue Jays drove his pitch count up. The Yankees were forced to yank him, and Toronto ended up grounding down the Yankee pen.

Gil didn’t fare any better this spring. His last start may have changed the perception of him a bit, though. The velocity was finally back. So was that strikeout stuff.

He needs to perform in the regular season, obviously, but a start like that could be the difference between him starting in the major leagues or going back to AAA. Spring stats aren’t the be-all end-all, but in his case, they were important.

Look, with Cole and Rodon out to start the year, they need a few guys to step up. Hopefully, that is Gil.

I wrote a little more about Gil for SI! Link in the bio to read it!
