Iran may have just shown it can strike much further than previously claimed.⁣
Tehran reportedly fired two long-range ballistic missiles toward the UK-US base on Diego Garcia — around 3,800–4,000 km from Iran. Neither reached the target: one fell into the sea, while the other was engaged by a US warship.⁣

If confirmed, this would mark Iran’s longest-range launch to date, well beyond the 2,000 km limit it has long stated.⁣

For years, Iran said it had capped its missile range at 2,000 km. In 2021, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said he had imposed that limit despite pressure from the military — presenting it as a deliberate signal that Europe was not a target.⁣

Iran has framed its missile program as a deterrent against the US, Israel and regional threats. The arsenal includes multiple long-range missiles, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies. ⁣

It says these include the Sejil, with a 2,000-km range; Emad, 1,700 km; Ghadr, 2,000 km; Shahab-3, 1,300 km; Khorramshahr, 2,000 km; and Hoveyzeh 1,350 km.⁣

At 4,000 km, the picture changes. Parts of Europe — including Athens, Rome, Vienna, Berlin and Warsaw — could fall within reach.⁣

The development also echoes an older debate. ⁣

The US built missile defense systems in Romania and Poland, saying they were aimed at potential threats from Iran. Russia has long rejected that explanation, arguing the systems were designed to counter Moscow instead.⁣
