A historic HBCU landmark in Virginia is getting renewed attention with a story that’s more complex than many realize. With a new book.

📍At Virginia Union University, the Belgian Friendship Building stands as one of the most unique structures on campus but new research reveals its origins are rooted in more than just international goodwill.

Originally built for the 1939 New York World’s Fair, the structure was later transferred to the university under the narrative of a “gift” from Belgium. However, historians now say that story was largely fabricated, as Belgian officials scrambled to offload the building during a financial crisis tied to World War II.
Despite its complicated past, the building became a vital resource for the university, serving as a library and symbol of opportunity during a time when resources for HBCUs were limited.

Today, the structure faces significant deterioration due to its temporary design and lack of funding for proper restoration.
Now, a new book and lecture at the Library of Virginia aim to shed light on its full history and spark conversations about preservation and investment in HBCU spaces.
