Art Basel is in full swing! We’re kicking off our daily event coverage with Augustas Serapinas’ Čiurlionis Gym, 2023. (@augustasserapinas)

This work reflects the artist’s time studying art at a Lithuanian university, where technical skills were taught through copying nature and making plaster copies of ancient Greek statues. Here, Serapinas refers to his old school archives, making copies and plaster models of his own works, which are then utilised in a gym workout several times a day during Art Basel. In Čiurlionis Gym, Serapinas likens art education to working out at the gym, where repetition guarantees success.

Čiurlionis Gym can be found at Art Basel Unlimited, Art Basel’s pioneering exhibition platform dedicated to projects that transcend the traditional art fair stand, including large-scale sculptures and paintings, video projections, installations, and live performances.

Behind Čiurlionis Gym is Martha Jungwirth’s ‘Memorial II (Triptychon), 2021.
