If you’re a Marquette journalism student looking to earn academic credits while getting hands-on experience working with a world-class journalist on a major investigative project, consider applying for a student reporting internship with the O’Brien Fellowship in Public Service Journalism.

Student interns work with professional journalists selected for nine-month O’Brien Fellowships on a groundbreaking, in-depth reporting or multi-media project that exposes injustice, unearths hidden truths, and makes a difference in the community and world.

Over the next 2026-2027 academic year (two semesters), student interns will earn three credits each semester toward advanced journalism/capstone requirements. To qualify, students must be incoming juniors, seniors or graduate students.

O’Brien student interns are treated as entry-level professionals and must meet high standards. They help with, research, data gathering, analysis, writing, interviewing, and multimedia among other things.

At the end of the internship, students could participate in a Marquette-sponsored summer internship at their fellows’ home newsrooms.

Each year, O’Brien awards four fellowships; each fellow pairs with one or two student interns. (Fellows for the next academic year have not yet been named.) Student interns work, on average, roughly six hours a week. Their schedules are worked out with their fellows and are usually flexible

O’Brien internships are competitive. To apply, please fill out the online application. Deadline is March 27 at 11:59 p.m.

Additionally, a resume, personal statement, work samples, and references are required. (No reference letters needed).

Interviews will be conducted by O’Brien Director Jeffery Gerritt. Student interns will be selected in April and start work in the fall semester.

For more information, go to the link in our bio or email Jeffery Gerritt at Jeffery.gerritt@marquette.edu.

We hope you will consider this extraordinary opportunity!
