On Monday, a jury in California awarded $19.25 million in damages to #DonnaMotsinger after concluding that #BillCosby drugged and sexually assaulted her back in 1972, when she was a waitress at a restaurant. Cosby had escorted her to one of his comedy shows.

In her lawsuit, Motsinger explained that Cosby attacked her when they were both in their 30s. He had given her wine and a pill that left her impaired. Cosby did not testify during the trial, and the jury sided with Motsinger’s account. Motsinger’s lawsuit is possible because California has amended its laws to allow sexual assault accusers to come forward after long periods of time.

Following the verdict, Cosby’s lawyer, Jennifer Bonjean, stated that they would appeal the decision. “I was obviously disappointed in the ruling, but we believe we have a strong appeal and we will pursue that,” she said. Motsinger responded by saying, “It has taken 54 years to get justice, and I know it’s not complete for the other women, but I hope it helps them a little bit.” She emphasized the importance of being believed, stating that it mattered to her that Cosby was held accountable for his actions.
