Iran has appointed Mohammad Baqer Zolqadr, a former Revolutionary Guards commander and senior hardline figure, as the new secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, replacing Ali Larijani, who was killed in Israeli strikes last week.⁣

Zolqadr has been appointed to the top security chair by a direct presidential decree and with the endorsement of Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei.⁣

The Supreme National Security Council is one of Iran’s most powerful bodies. It is formally chaired by President Masoud Pezeshkian but operates under the authority of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final say on key decisions.⁣

The council coordinates national security and foreign policy, bringing together top military, intelligence and government officials, along with representatives of the supreme leader.⁣

According to Iranian media, Zolqadr brings decades of experience across Iran’s military, security and judicial institutions.⁣

He previously served as deputy for security at the Interior Ministry, held a senior role at the Armed Forces General Staff, including as deputy chief for Basij affairs, and spent nearly a decade in senior positions within the judiciary.⁣

He studied economics at the University of Tehran before the 1979 Islamic Revolution, later earning a master’s in public administration and a doctorate in strategic management from the National Defense University.⁣

After the Iran-Iraq war, he spent eight years as head of the IRGC Joint Staff during the presidency of Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, followed by another eight years as deputy commander-in-chief of the Revolutionary Guards.⁣

Politically, he is aligned with Iran’s hardline camp and previously led the electoral headquarters of the Popular Front of Islamic Revolutionary Forces.⁣
