Welcome back to the series #AskTheMidsMonday, where we have midshipmen answer your questions. 

In three days, midshipmen assigned to be Surface Warfare Officers (SWO) will choose their first ship and homeport during the U.S. Naval Academy’s annual Ship Selection Night in Alumni Hall, Feb.2.

This Monday, we are featuring First Class (senior) midshipmen in the #ClassOf2023 who will commission as Surface Warfare Officers (SWOs) in May. Featured are MIDN 1/C Journey Peters, SWO IP; MIDN 1/C Adan Valdez, SWO METOC; MIDN 1/C Graziel Hinola, Nuke SWO; and MIDN 1/C Kristen Ocampo, Nuke SWO.

SWO IP: Information Professional (IP) Option Officers are commissioned as a Surface Warfare Officer (SWO) where they will complete a SWO tour and qualify as a Surface Warfare Officer. Following those tours, SWO-IP options begin serving in IP specific assignments.

SWO METOC: Meteorology and Physical Oceanography (METOC) Officers are commissioned as a Surface Warfare Officer (SWO) where they will complete a SWO tour and qualify as a Surface Warfare Officer. Following those tours, SWO-METOCs attend Naval Postgraduate School and attend the METOC program.

Nuke SWO: Surface Warfare Nuclear Officers  serve alternate tours in conventional surface ships and in nuclear-powered aircraft carriers where they lead Sailors in operating and maintaining the nuclear propulsion plants.

The three questions for our future Surface Warfare Officers are:
(1) If you had to choose: port or platform?
(2) What is your desired port and/or platform?
(3) What is your walk-up song?
