I recently had the opportunity to interview Aneesh Raman, linkedin’s Chief Economic Opportunity Officer at their San Francisco headquarters to learn about his new book, Open to Work.

What struck me was his conviction that the skills we’ve been calling “soft” are about to become the most valuable skills in the economy.

Here are 3 things from our conversation that changed how I think about work:

1️⃣ Your job is NOT your title. 

Aneesh breaks work into three buckets: tasks AI will do on its own, tasks you’ll do with AI, and tasks that remain uniquely human. 

The people getting ahead right now are the ones sorting their work into those buckets. This is the work that requires trust, judgment, creativity, and human connection. That work can’t be automated. And it’s where your value lives.

2️⃣ The collar hierarchy is inverting.

For over a century, white-collar knowledge work sat at the top of the economy. 

Now it’s the most automatable. Meanwhile, pink-collar work like teaching, nursing, caregiving requires exactly the human capabilities AI can’t replicate. 

The skills the economy ranked last are becoming the ones that matter most. 

Aneesh calls the 5Cs (curiosity, courage, creativity, compassion, and communication) our real competitive edge as humans.

3️⃣ There are millions of “Lost Einsteins” and AI could unlock them.

The book cites research showing that children from low-income families with top test scores are half as likely to become inventors as their wealthy peers. 

AI is the 1st tool that can democratize knowledge, mentorship, and opportunity.

We’re entering one of the biggest shifts in work since the industrial revolution. 

And the people who learn how to navigate it early will shape what comes next.
