Walsingham Abbey, known as England’s Nazareth.

Stopped by on my way back from meeting clients in Norfolk who are looking to buy in the French Riviera. Walsingham has been a place of pilgrimage since the Middle Ages — one of the four great shrines of medieval Christendom, ranking alongside Jerusalem, Rome and Santiago da Compostella.

The Abbey sits within the historic grounds of Walsingham Priory. The Priory was founded in c. 1153 and is best known for having housed a Marian shrine. Henry III came on a pilgrimage to Walsingham in 1241, Edward I in 1280 and 1296, edward II in 1315, Henry VI in 1455, Henry VII in 1487, and Henry VIII in 1513. The Priory was nearly completely destroyed in 1538, with only the east end still standing.

Today the entire estate belongs to the Gurney family who bought it in 1921. A beautiful piece of history 🏰⚜️
