So many things in life challenge us. For me, design has opened my eyes to the world around me. For example, Our new Plank Desk that is made from a 9’ long “fall off cut” that we collected from angelcitylumber was originally thought to be unusable. Side note* Angel City is an incredible company located just outside of downtown LA which is an unlikely place for a lumber mill. They also harvest trees from around LA giving them access to incredible old growth trees from neighborhoods that hold significant history. As I saw what Angel City was doing and hearing about these fall off cuts, I began thinking… how could I minimally intervene with the beauty of this natural material while adding functionality to the home. I’m not one to consider mass manufacturing but rather make pieces that are considered and made to order.

The uneven bottom to this tree presented a difficult challenge. How do we mount the legs? I wanted a desk that Beksopperman and I could sit at together and work side by side and so we designed these basses that are also storage in our signature 3/4” tube steel frame language. The tops are wrapped in black leather and the drawer faces made with blackened white oak with leather pulls. The way we resolved the top fitting was to drill holes to a set depth and rest the plank on 5/8” solid rods. This allowed for a fixed height while keeping the base of the plank irregular.
