I have spent entire afternoons watching lions do nothing in particular.

They sleep, shift their weight, open one eye. There is no performance in it. Just presence — theirs and, eventually, mine.

A century ago, more than 200,000 lions roamed this continent. Fewer than 20,000 remain.

I think about that in the silence between one breath and the next.
