At Giraffe Manor, the Rothschild's giraffes come to the windows at breakfast. I reached out and one lowered its head to meet me. That exchange never gets ordinary.

Giraffe populations have fallen by nearly 40% in three decades — a quiet crisis that rarely makes the front page. The State of Giraffe 2025 report shows numbers beginning to stabilise in places where conservation is working. Stabilise is not a small word.

Today is World Giraffe Day.
